Not So Exciting Sedona, Arizona

Nomadic Life

Sunday, April 10, 2022 – Tuesday, April 12, 2022

I’ve done lots of travel around Arizona since becoming a resident as well as living in my RV full-time, yet I had yet to get to beautiful Sedona. I was very excited about making it up there.

Staying on Forest Road 525

We arrived in Sedona around noon after spending the night south of here on Highway 17 at a place called Bloody Basin (who names these locations? lol).

I guess we could have made it to Sedona from Marana, Arizona in one day but we would have arrived on a Saturday, it’s rarely a good idea to arrive to a popular boondocking location on a Friday or Saturday due to the crowds. Even arriving on Sunday we found that most spots were taken. But we found a great spot a couple miles off Highway 89A on forest road 525.

Forest road (FR) 525/Loy Butte seems to be a very popular place for most size RVs, travel trailers, vans, etc. The further you go up the dirt road the smaller the rigs get due to the fact it is a really bumpy ride and there are times a longer RV would have some issues; as we traveled further up the camp sites seem to get smaller and more difficult to enter – sharp angled, steep and/or gutted driveways become more of a nightmare the longer your rig is.

The rest of the day we settled in, took walks and hung out.

We left the Tucson area because it was getting too hot. Sedona showed temperatures 20 F lower, which sounds much more conducive to hiking. (I heard Sedona has some pretty awesome hikes!) But what I didn’t take into consideration was the fact that there has been a cold wind running through here since we arrived. And rain had been forecasted.

Instead of hiking Monday we decided to wait a day until the bad weather cleared. Instead we ran to the grocery store in town for fresh food.

Boy! Sedona is a crowded place, sometimes I forget about tourists. Since I’m out here full-time I rarely know the date, sometimes I know the day of the week, and thus don’t take into consideration when tourists are out in full bloom, lol.

We were in town on a crowded Monday afternoon! I mentioned to John that we need to avoid town (and hikes) from Friday to Sunday for sure. He agreed.

Remember I mentioned hiking on Tuesday? Well, it’s even windier than yesterday! So we’re staying in the RV. I’m in no hurry, our view from camp is gorgeous and we took a 3 mile walk this morning before the winds picked up.

I’d like to get work done but the signal here on forest road 525/Loy Butte is horrific! My phone will show 2-4 bars of 5G yet Instagram or hotspotting my computer will show NO CONNECTION. What the hell? I’d have the same signal outside Tucson and never had issues. I find this confusing. Maybe it’s the mountains in the area, they can really mess with your signal.

Usually I like to get some blog work done late morning to early afternoon yet this may prove impossible up here. I guess I’ll head down to Starbucks one afternoon to work. (Which didn’t happen because Starbuck’s WIFI was down, bummer!)
