MUST READ : Colorado Trail Day 3

Rain, Rain, Go Away

This day on the trail was, so far, my most trying.

I (we) were tired.

The adrenaline and excitement of being on trail seemed to have worn off and the miles were starting to take their toll on my body and feet.

But there’s always a bright side to any day on trail. And I found 2 that day!

  1. The hike that day was relatively flat.
  2. We were meeting many other hikers and outdoor people – thank you trail maintenance crews for your hard work!

About half way through our day we turned a corner and, boom, clouds – dark storm clouds! I was hoping we’d skirt around them or the wind would move them away.

But that didn’t happen…

This was my first major Colorado storm while hiking and frankly, I was a bit nervous. Walking in the open we rushed as best we could to trees for cover.

Yet the rain began.

Putting our tents up in rain was no east feat. Then removing the puddles from the bathtub of my tent was frustrating. But this is when amazing hiking friends really show their true colors.

Even in the face of staying up all night in a wet tent with everything soaked but anything with goose down (my jacket and mummy sleeping bag), as I almost cried out of frustration, my hiking partners eased my mind with some humor.

Soon my worries we’re replaced with a warm sunset and a rainless night.
