Three months in, and I’m still asking myself: Can I really complete all 9 of my extreme goals?

At 53, I might have taken on challenges that push my body, mind, and spirit harder than ever before. Some days I wonder if I’ve bitten off more than I can chew.

This year is about more than just “achieving goals.” It’s about transforming how I think, how I live, and who I choose to be — all after more than five decades of living a certain way. Every day I ask myself, Can I actually do this?

If you’ve been there, you know the hormonal shifts make achieving physical changes more challenging. What worked in our 30s and 40s just doesn’t cut it anymore. It takes more intentional effort, smarter workouts, and a commitment to nutrition.

Healing After a Toxic Relationship During My Midlife Transformation

So, what about my other six goals? Let’s talk about the most important one first: healing myself and no longer allowing toxic people into my life.

That starts with setting clear boundaries — and actually keeping them. Through research and self-reflection, I learned that boundaries come from knowing your personal values. Without them, I’m not really me.

Once I defined my values, I began living by them daily. They guide my decisions, my relationships, and even my work life. After a toxic relationship left me broke, alone, and disconnected from myself, I promised I would never again allow someone to strip away my identity.

The hardest part? Testing those boundaries in the real world. For me, that means meeting new people and seeing if I can hold my ground. As an introvert, this isn’t easy. But I’ve met people at work who respect me, and I’ve been proud of how I’ve stood firm.

Only Allowing Respectful People Into My Life

Another big part of starting over after 50 is choosing the right circle. I’m learning to only keep people close who respect my boundaries, listen when I speak up, and communicate openly.

It’s a two-way street — I make sure I offer them the same respect in return. It feels good to have relationships that are mutual, supportive, and drama-free.

Starting Over After 50: My Financial Goals

The next four goals all center around money. This is a big part of my midlife transformation because financial independence equals freedom.

  1. Save $6,000 for a car – I’ve been borrowing my mom’s vehicle to get to work, but I’m happy to say I’ve reached this goal! A car of my own is in the near future.
  2. Save for my future – I have a retirement account that I contribute to every month, and as my income grows, I’ll invest more.
  3. Move out of my mom’s home by February 2026 – This one feels doable within the deadline.
  4. Make $6,000 a month by February 2026 – This would allow me to live minimally and still invest in my future. But I’ll be honest: building an online business from scratch has been harder than I expected. Still, I refuse to give up because my ultimate dream is to travel again.

What’s Next in My Midlife Transformation

Starting over after 50 isn’t easy. It’s messy, emotional, and sometimes exhausting — but it’s also empowering. I’m learning what I’m capable of, even when progress feels slow.

My goals may be big, but they’re also deeply personal. They represent freedom, self-respect, and a life I truly want to live.
