Starting Over After 50: 3 Months Into My Midlife Transformation Part 1

Midlife Reinvention at 53 Article and Starting over at 52

At 53, I feel like a completely new transformed woman. But if you had seen me a year ago, you wouldn’t recognize the person I was.

Back then, I was broke, heartbroken, and completely blindsided by a life I thought I had carefully protected myself from. This isn’t my first time starting over in midlife—I had to do it years ago after my divorce. But back then, I had a financial cushion. This time, I was older, broke, and standing at the edge of a massive change I never saw coming.

Last June, I walked away from a toxic relationship that left me with nothing. I was lonely, exhausted, and at rock bottom. For six long months, I sat in self-pity before I finally realized something: this was my opportunity to start completely over. My big MIDLIFE TRANSFORMATION!

Sure, I was 52, but why should that stop me?

Setting 9 Bold Goals for Midlife Reinvention

That’s when I made a promise to myself: to rebuild my life and create a future that feels strong, healthy, and secure. I set 9 extreme goals that I plan to achieve by February 2026:

  1. Hold my boundaries – I let a toxic person into my life because I didn’t recognize my own red flags. That changes now.
  2. Surround myself with people who respect those boundaries – I’m already seeing this happen and can’t wait to share more soon.
  3. Save $6,000 for a car – Because yes, the toxic ex still has mine.
  4. Start investing again – I’ve already restarted this after landing a new job.
  5. Move out – I’m grateful to be living with my mom but I’m craving independence again.
  6. Earn $6,000/month – This is the number I need to live simply, save, and have freedom.
  7. Drop two pant sizes – I feel my best when I’m leaner and lighter.
  8. Build muscle and stay strong – Women in midlife need muscle to fight bone and muscle loss.
  9. Eat more veggies – My goal is to get them into 80% of my weekly meals.

The First 3 Months of My Midlife Transformation

The past year hasn’t been easy, but it’s been transformative. Over the last three months, my body has completely changed—I’ve dropped a pant size, gained muscle, improved my sleep, balanced my energy, and found my happiness again.

My Fitness Plan

I knew I had to focus on resistance training and endurance. I started small:

  • 8 lb dumbbells
  • Free workout videos on YouTube
  • Walking 2 miles a day, 5 days a week

Because of my hiking and backpacking background, I knew carrying weight helped me shed fat fast. I bought a weighted vest (starting at 11 lbs, now up to 17 lbs) and walk 2–5 miles, 5–6 days a week.

This worked. Within weeks, my clothes fit looser. After 2 months, I officially dropped a pant size.

Now, I’m lifting 8, 12, and 15 lb weights for strength training, 2–3 times a week. It’s become a healthy addiction—if I skip a workout or walk, I feel like my day isn’t complete.

My Nutrition Plan

I aim for veggies in 80% of my meals. I don’t always hit it perfectly, but simply striving for it keeps me eating whole, healthy foods most of the time. The more active I am, the better I want to eat—and ironically, the less food I crave overall.

And yes, I still enjoy treats. I’m not chasing perfection—I’m chasing progress.

Transforming Yourself After 50 Is Possible

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: midlife is just the beginning. At 53, I’m proving to myself every day that I can reinvent myself after 50—rebuilding my body, my health, my finances, and my confidence.

If you’re also looking to set big goals and start your own midlife reinvention, you’re not alone. I created a free Monday Motivations email series that includes:

  • A printable goal tracker
  • Monday morning motivations and journal prompts
  • My personal answers to the weekly reflections

Next week, I’ll share updates on more of my 9 goals. Let’s do this together—because rebuilding life after 50 isn’t slowing down…it’s just getting started.
