Midlife Reinvention: Starting Over at 50 and Broke (But Hopeful)

Blog post about how I'm reinventing myself and my life at 52 years in midlife

Here I am—52 years old, broke, and starting over. And honestly? It’s been one of the hardest and most humbling experiences of my life. But it’s also one of the most hopeful. Midlife reinvention isn’t just a catchy phrase—it’s something I’m living every single day.

I never thought I’d be reinventing myself at midlife.

How Did I Get Here?

Let me rewind to June 2024. That was the month everything fell apart. My long-term relationship ended in the most sudden, painful way. One minute we were driving across the country; the next, he was dropping me off at my mom’s house—discarded, like an old piece of luggage.

I had no income. No savings. And no idea what came next.

At 52, starting over isn’t cute. It’s not glamorous. As a woman over 50, it’s downright scary. There’s this pressure—you should have it all figured out by now, right? I sure thought I did. But life had other plans.

The Shame Was Real (But It Didn’t Win)

I felt so much shame. My mom and her husband had warned me about him. So had his family. But I stayed. And now, there I was, moving into their spare bedroom with a few bags of belongings and zero plan.

The First Step in My Midlife Reinvention

It wasn’t until October 2024 that I really decided enough was enough. I was tired of feeling like a loser. Tired of being broke and feeling stuck. I wanted my independence back—financially, emotionally, all of it.

So I took the first step. I updated my resume (first time in 9 years!). I started applying for jobs—anything I thought I could handle, even if it wasn’t ideal. It took over a month before I heard back from anyone. But finally, I landed a retail job. It’s not my dream job, but it’s a paycheck. And it’s helping me save for my own vehicle. I’m hoping to have my own set of wheels by summer.

Reinventing Yourself in Midlife Isn’t Easy

Here’s the thing about starting over at 50 and broke—it’s hard. Employers don’t exactly jump at the chance to hire a 50-plus woman, even one with decades of experience. And there’s always that voice in your head telling you you’ve messed up your life.

But here’s the other thing—midlife reinvention is possible. You can reinvent yourself at midlife and build a life that’s even better than before. I’m proof of that. Even if I’m still broke (for now), I’m hopeful. And that’s huge.

What My Life Looks Like Now

Four months into this new chapter, I’m working my retail job. I’m writing on my blog again (hi!). I’m making YouTube videos, and I’ve even started an Etsy shop selling Pickleball T-shirts—because why not have a little fun while rebuilding your life?

(Check out my Pickleball T-Shirts on Etsy if you’re curious!)

It’s not easy. But I’m no longer stuck. And there’s a kind of freedom that comes with starting over in midlife. I’ve got five decades of lessons under my belt, and I’ve finally stopped caring what anyone else thinks. This is my life, and I get to reinvent it my way.

One Step at a Time

If you’re a woman over 50 thinking, “How do I reinvent myself at midlife?”—this is what I’ve learned:
Take one step. Then another. Don’t focus on how far you have to go. Just keep moving forward.

I’m still broke, but I’m better off than I was last year. And those little steps are adding up. I remind myself of that every day—especially on the hard ones.

      HI PW,

I appreciate you following me on my journey! It’s just begun and I can’t wait to grow and show you more.

Prescott is a place I’d love to explore. I’ve been up there once in my RV but had to leave because of a fire in the forest. I’d love to come back some day.

Thank you for your comment and I hope you have a wonderful day!
