Nomadic Life

In this post I continue my maiden RV voyage into Colorado!! After leaving Mancos, CO I head east on Hwy 160 just past Pagosa Springs to the West Fork San Juan River to camp my RV for free.

My name is Allie and I’ve lived full-time in my Class C Minnie Winnie RV since July 2020. I hit the road in search of free land to rest my tires and head as well as for adventure! I love to hike, kayak and even attempt to ride my Dual Sport Yamaha XT250. Since starting my new life I have found the most joy in meeting all the amazing people out here! So many stories, so little time!

My RV Camping in Colorado : Beautiful West Fork San Juan River

Traveling Colorado route 160 just outside Pagosa Springs I found a place to park my RV up in the woods next too the beautiful San Juan River!

Campendium is the app I use to find these amazing places to stay for free in my RV.  It simple : open the free app, do a search for what you need for camping an RV, from the app open Google maps and navigate to your location!

The West Fork San Juan River camp locations are off Hwy 160, just up dirt road 648 a couple of miles.  I have to mention that this dirt road seemed to be pretty well maintained!  What a breeze driving it in my Minnie Winnie!

At about the 2 mile mark, just past the bridge that crosses the river, I found 4 camping spots that could accommodate my 26 feet of moving living space.  Three of the spots were taken so I backed my rig into that fourth one quickly as to not lose it to anyone else;  with limited space in a remarkably beautiful setting one tends to not muck around with making decisions to park, I took what I found quickly.

Once I parked, leveled and settled in I hopped out, took a deep breathe and decided that this is the life I want to continue living!  A new natural view with every move I make – and this one had a river and mountain!

Enjoying my typical lunch of a sandwich and chips at my dining table, I listened in on birds singing and watched the squirrels, well, do what squirrels do – look cute!  I felt at home and at ease here.

After lunch a walk was in order so I headed over to the bridge a few feet away and enjoyed some time overlooking the river.  I sauntered down the road I drove in on and back, then decided to head down to the river.

Just above my campsite

There was a beautiful trail that I had seen some fisherman take so I followed along.  It didn’t take long to reach the shore yet I had a huge obstacle there!  MOSQUITOS!

Mosquitos love me!  I wasn’t expecting to see the little bloodsuckers near a river so I came unprepared for battle.  After about 5 bites and I headed back to the sanctuary of my RV.

Go left for more campsites. Go right for hiking.

Not one to sit still for long, I walked up the road where to where it ends.  To my delight there was a HIKING TRAIL here!!  EEKK!  It was settled, I’d hike it the next day!

I stayed at the West Fork San Juan River camp area for 3 days then, unfortunately, I had trouble with my refrigerator so I had to leave. Turns out I didn’t have my RV level enough for the fridge to run, lesson learned, I level properly from now on.
