How to Set Personal Goals After 50: A Journey Into Better You

I never imagined I’d be setting personal goals at 53. But here I am revamping and reinventing my life!

If you had asked the 20-, 30-, or even 40-year-old me what life would look like in my 50s, I would’ve laughed and said, “By then, I’ll have my shit together. I won’t need goals—I’ll be living my dreams.”

Well… I was wrong.

What I’ve learned is this: as long as we’re alive, we should be growing and setting goals – mentally, physically, emotionally, and financially. I didn’t always think this way, and maybe that’s why I ended up here—broke, exhausted, and not feeling great in my body.

So this year, I’m going big. I’m setting extreme personal goals for myself. Not to survive, but to thrive.

My Midlife Personal Goals for the Year

I’m focusing on three key areas: Psychological, Financial, and Physical.

Psychological

  • Learn how to hold better boundaries
  • Practice asserting what I want and need and surround myself with people who respect those needs

Financial

  • Save $6,000 for a car down payment
  • Keep investing at least $100/month in retirement (increase after buying the car)
  • Live independently again by February 2026
  • Earn $6000 / month by February 2026

Physical

  • Lose 20 pounds or drop 2 pant sizes by February 2026
  • Build muscle through heavy resistance training 2–3x/week
  • Eat vegetables with every meal

Privately, I’ve set these up as SMART goals and I plan to write about my goals publicly here on my blog. I’ll be sharing the wins, the fails, and the raw realness of it all.
